All of us agree that when we evaluate a building for its overall appeal, the exterior takes the first place. The building has to look good. Earlier, it was ‘elevation’, today, it is façade. The role of architects is becoming limited to the design of the outer envelope of buildings. This is not a healthy trend, argues Architect Christopher Benninger, in his interesting article in this issue of Buidotech. The way you envelope a building should convey the building’s specific functions, agrees Architect Haffez Contractor. We also bring to you a detailed case study of ICICI Bank building in Hyderabad where glass has been used extensively to suit the ‘interior’ functions.

With cuts in water supply ranging from 30% to 40% in various parts of Mumbai all through this summer, it is now clear that Mumbai is equally vulnerable to water deficiency as any other city/or town in India. Water is becoming increasingly scarce and precious resource. Globally, the construction industry has already woken up to the urgent need to conserve and manage water and has taken measures to implement sustainable water design throughout the build process. In India too, many projects take into consideration water design elements to avoid wastage of water.. The efforts are, however, not in the scale matching the actual requirement.

Water conservation in buildings is achieved partly through effective plumbing design, efficient appliances and fittings and by incorporating systems to recycle waste water. As the summer heat rises, a collaborative effort involving builders, designers and end users is called for. In one of the forthcoming issues of Buildotech, we will look at sustainable water design, an essential strategy for safeguarding our future.
