Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), in conjunction with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), launched the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) green building certification system in India to jumpstart the mainstreaming of resource-efficient buildings across the country in a fast, simple and affordable way.
EDGE is a free, easy-to-use software that suggests practical solutions for energy and water savings, improving operational performance at little or no extra cost. To qualify for certification, a building must achieve a 20% reduction in energy, water and construction resources compared to a standard building. IFC’s green buildings program in India is supported by the European Union.
The system empowers builders to choose technical solutions while capturing costs and projected operational savings. The drivers behind EDGE are financial but the results are environmental as it helps mitigate climate change by encouraging resource-efficient development. “This will make buildings more resource-efficient, drive the eco-friendly construction market in India and help to prove the business case for developers to differentiate their projects by building green.” said Mahesh Ramanujam, President, GBCI and Chief Executive Officer, USGBC.
