The new Navi Mumbai office of Clariant Chemicals by Mumbai-based Planet 3 Studios reflects the company’s vision of an open collaborative and flexible work environment to break down boundaries.

A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and in the end must be unmeasurable”, said the legendary architect Louis Kahn. The new corporate office of Clariant Chemicals, a leading speciality chemicals company in Airoli, Navi Mumbai by Planet 3 Studios is a brilliant case in point.

The challenging site required multifaceted space planning to resolve complex interrelation between different business verticals spread over four floors but did not share a structural core. The client brief called for an open, connected collaborative work space which has more flexible environment. The architects, Santha Gour Mattoo and Kalhan Mattoo had to meticulously plan for a design which allowed interconnection without impacting the usability of floor space in the office. They addressed the complexity of this site with their intuitive, flexible and experimentally satisfying method.

The architects addressed the problem of the multiple levels not sharing a single core by locating the main reception on the ninth floor. The voluminous 370sqmt reception area is an architectural expression of a bold statement of purpose by the company recognised as a leading player in the industry. The space incorporates a dramatic backlit PVC ceiling and a sculptural central desk which acts as the striking focal point in the space. The space serves as a holding area for visitors as well as a connection between the two structural cores. The elongated reception area straddled two cores and ensured that once inside the visitors did not have to leave company secure area to access different part of the office. The reception area is large enough to double up as an exhibition space to showcase client’s brand with an outsized screen displaying company information.
