Steps are being taken to turn the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Bridge and its components into an aesthetically pleasing structure. In line with the plans, HMR announced winners of the design competition for landscaping below metro rail viaduct – which attracted up to 35 valid entries. Rohith Andrade from Earth Work, a Bengaluru based firm, won the first prize; Oscar G Concessao from Oscar & Ponni Architects, Chennai, won the second prize; and the third prize went to Harish Vangara of Iammies Landscapes, a Hyderabad firm.
Medians under the Metro Rail’s viaduct will be covered with sound and pollution absorbing plants; art forms made of stone and recyclable material; piers will be covered with creeper plants and Metro stations will be filled with murals by professionals, amateurs and children. Apart from the medians covered with greenery, the landscapes designs included solar powered lamp posts and use of HMR parapet wall for advertising. The architects considered path of sunshine, rainwater harvesting pits and pedestrian crossings between medians.
Also, proposed are handrails and different tiles to help pedestrians and the disabled, separate parking space for emergency vehicles, signboards indicating the destinations beneath, green screens for ad campaigns, sculptures at appropriate spaces and murals on the viaduct walls.
