Ar. Shailesh Parikh founder of Vadodara, based architectural and interior design firm Creative Design Management explains in his own words the challenge of developing a site for residences of group of 11 friends each with their own requirements and preferences.

The project was to be designed for the group of 11 friends who were part of the same reale state business group and wanted to their families also to live together. This entailed designing exclusive spaces for each family having their own needs and each one of them looking all different layout/interior/exterior/landscape.So, eleven homes, all with different elevations, planning and interiors were conceptualized on a site owned by the group at Sama-Savaliroad, North-east of Vadodara near by the airport and major highways.

Site Layout

We started with the basic division of the land as per individual requirements of each member, created landscaped open areas with common facilities like clubhouse with gym, spa, banquet, party lounge, indoor games and guest house. Site entry was controlled with automated gate and security system included CCTV camera sin common areas and individual security system. Other facilities were common solar system, Wi-Fi and rain harvesting. Individual units feature home automation controlled by i-Pad/i-Phone.

The main layout leading to individual dwellings comprised Vaastuoriented clean forums, with voids for air circulation. The primary construction materials were wood, steel, glass and stone and stone stamping technique was used. The landscape features sculptures from Bali-Indonesia and local artisans touch in main staircase designed in wood glass and MS steel.

Unit Planning
The requirement was to have five bedrooms home with two bed room son ground floor, home theater, formal living, dinning, bar and library, puja room, foyer with family room & two kitchens – one for family and other forthe cook. Additional facilities required were servant quarter, parking for at least three cars and sufficient open space for landscaping. Vaastu was to be the major consideration in space design.

Vadodara experiences hot weather most of the year as the sun manly travels from east to west from south and only four months from north. We created big open space between stairs and the main entry to the house on north side surrounded with greenery. The other three sides had glazed façade.

In the exterior rustic tiles cladding is complemented with water fall in the North east corner wall as one enters the home. The steps leading to the main entry are of glass over the water body.

In the interiors, the Italian marble flooring in the entire house was kept in one color while all the toilets finished in rustic looking floor tiles, onyx marble ceiling sand glass partition for dry & wet area of the toilets.

The double height family room and dining room enhance the verticality within the house as also offer visual connectivity from ground to first floor. Another architectural feature is the staircase of cantilevered steps finished in teak wood planks with MS steel covered in teak wood horizontal members and 12 mm thick glass in between. The suspended natural wood finished light from the ceiling and glass walled elevator complete the aesthetics of the space.
