Rachana Sansad’s Institute of Environmental Architecture (RSIEA) in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai and Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Brihanmumbai Centre organized a proramme last month on the topic of ‘Finding Solutions for Solid Waste Disposal in Urban Areas’.
The program featured the screening of a film by the U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai, on solid waste management in San Francisco, California. It graphically showed how waste of various types – some even toxic and hazardous were being dealt with by the city using innovative new solutions
The film screening was followed by a panel discussion that emphasized the need for proper planning, management and appropriate technology for waste handling and disposal in urban areas with minimum impact to the environment. The panelists were E.R. Ravindran, Municipal Commissioner, Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC), Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Scientist and Head, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Mandar Halbe, Corporator, KDMC, Dr. A.D. Sawant, former ProVice Chancellor, Mumbai University, Uddhav Chandanshive, Solid Waste Management, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Ar. Milind Sambhare, Chairman, Indian Institute of Architects of Architecture (IIA), Brihan Mumbai Centre.
