The next World Expo in 2017 will be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan and leaders are already preparing for the event by unveiling 46 designs for the site master plan by firms from around the world. The theme of the 2017 Expo is ‘Future Energy’ and the competing plans all revolve around the concepts of renewable energy, sustainability and the green economy.
Some world famous architectural firms that made it into this round of the competition are UNStudio, Safdie Architects, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill, GMP International Gmbh, Zaha Hadid Architects; Coop Himmelb(l)au, J. Mayer H. Architects, Snohetta, and Mecanoo. Competitors were asked to make sure their design addressed key concepts like, renewable energy, electric transport, energy security, CO2 emissions reduction and energy efficiency. An international competition was held in the spring of 2013 and over 100 firms submitted proposals.
The last World Expo was held in Shanghai in 2010 and it featured a plethora of amazing designs and eco-themed pavilions from around the world. The expo’s goal is to create a site that will create a legacy for the city by providing new housing, offices, commercial facilities and research laboratories for the betterment of the area.
